For today’s trip-a-licious Prime Cuts Playlist, we spring a tiger from a trap, put a grandchild on a calliope and fly an elephant down an L.A. boulevard.

Dumbo Gets Mad

An Italian-born, Los Angeles-living band whose goal is to get on with the good vibes, Dumbo Gets Mad channels Floyd, the Lizard King and Ariel Pink through classic analog equipment, twisting out a multi-colored musical trip. Listening to “Why Try” is something like riding down the middle of La Cienega in the middle of the night on the back of a flying elephant. A really stoned flying elephant.

Grandchildren

A bit more uptempo but just as likely to hang out in your hippocampus is “Saturn Returns,” a fashonably freaky combination of acoustic guitars, electronic reverberations and world rhythms by Grandchildren (a.ka. Aleksander Martray). From an “audio scrapbook of memories” from Martray’s childhood, it’s like riding a calliope down the rabbit hole.

Trap Tiger

At the other end of the rabbit hole, we’re tripped by Trap Tiger into a ten minute trap of tranquility, traffic and timeless tunery. Driven by “a love for the live spectacle and an ‘anything goes’ writing policy,” Trap Tiger are, indeed, difficult to categorize as they draw from every musical angle of earth, from Phish to Floyd and back again.
